Review – Robocop with Spring-Loaded Holster
After two Robocop action figure reviews last month — Battle Damaged Robocop review here, Night Fighter Robocop review here — you may think it’s all over, but then BAM! Here’s NECA’s Robocop with Spring-Loaded Holster* to entertain us all. And while it’s just a slight tweak on the basic figure, it’s such an awesome gimmick that this must be the toy you buy if you buy only one Robocop action figure.
Sculpt, Paint, and Accessories
See my two earlier reviews — Battle Damaged Robocop review here, Night Fighter Robocop review here — and just assume that every great thing I said in those two reviews applies to this action figure. If the Robocop with Spring-Loaded Holster* action figure isn’t a retool of an earlier toy then the company did an excellent job with the new sculpt; this guy fits in beautifully with the other two figures and I’ve got no complaints with the quality of the work.
The Holster
The below photos show the Robocop with Spring-Loaded Holster* action figure with the leg in the closed position. On the lower right you can see the seam where the panels open on the thigh while the lower left pic shows the trigger on the back of the leg. Press that trigger and . . .
Opened Leg!
The spring mechanism works perfectly, with the leg panels snapping open as soon as you press the trigger on the back of the leg. I’m not sure how the leg handles multiple openings and closings, but the dozen or so times I activated this gimmick I had no problems at all. Getting the gun back into the leg is a bit of a challenge — I blame my fingers — but it’s not impossible and the gimmick is so fantastic I can overlook the tight quarters and difficulty I had returning the gun to its hidden holster within the figure’s leg.
Closing Thoughts
The Robocop with Spring-Loaded Holster* action figure really is just an earlier toy with a new gimmick, but I don’t let that bother me at all when it’s a gimmick that works perfectly and is exactly what the character needed. While the glow-in-the-dark figure (review here) sports a fun gimmick, this figure has both a fun and appropriate gimmick . . . which is exactly what makes me say that this is the Robocop action figure you want in your collection.
I think after a few problem toys I am finally starting to see why so many of you have been pushing NECA’s work on me. This is one remarkable action figure.
I’m glad he’s awesome. I ordered him a few days ago and he should be here today. I can’t wait to get him out. I have the Night Fighter version on its way too.
I don’t have any of neca’s robocop figures yet. I almost bought the GITD figure when they had it for sale for $9.99 a couple of months ago, but ended up walking away.
I don’t really want more than one, but have been having a hard time deciding between this one and the battle damaged figure.
Also, I haven’t spent the $15 to get one of these yet because I’ve been filling in gaps in my glyos figures, saving money for club Mordle, ordered several Banimon guys, and finally ordered a Combat R Zero figure.
I really, really wanted that Plutonium figure; he would have absolutely been the one I purchased, but I can’t spend $200+ just to get that one exclusive color, so I ordered the red one instead, and will probably get the green or black one later.
@T-Rav – I think you’ll be happy with him when he arrives. Just realize that the leg plates snap on if they come off. (Well. they will if you don’t force it. A friend had his come off and he popped them right back on.)
@clark – I also want that GITD Combat-R Zero robot. I’ve got all of the colors except that one, and not having the glowing guy makes me sad. I should just buy the entire set and then use the duplicates as prizes.
