Review – Snot Beast v2

Designer/Resin * Year: 2010

I’ve already looked at oOMoSOo’s (blog, Flickr, Etsy) Snot Beast resin toys a couple of times now (first review, second review), but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun and look at the new Snot Beast, the towering v2 design. This is an entirely new sculpt, but the beastie fits in perfectly with his tiny ancestor.

Packaging

Two toys packed back-to-back in bags with a header card. Simple, effective, and another spot where the love shows (it’s obvious these were created for the love of toys and art, because for $20 this is a great deal on resin toys) because again we get custom header art.

And An Art Card!

And the art on the header card wasn’t alone. Inside, wrapped in black paper, was this original painting. This makes me start to question my own resin toys; I feel like I must be over charging or something when I look at this set because this is just too damned good of a deal. We may have to take out oOMoSOo because he’s making some of us look bad.

The New Sculpt

Roughly one-and-a-half inches tall, this new Snot Beast design is like the old version but with arms and legs; it’s almost as if the old design grew up and transformed into a new, more powerful monster. And we get the fun two-figures-in-one approach again, with two fronts and no back on the monster. The pics below show how this works; the arms are raised over the monster’s head and from either direction it looks like it’s coming to destroy us.

Shiny!

The resin toy is wonderfully painted, but it stands out from the previous design in that this time the guy was given a shiny gloss finish. And it’s noticeably shiny when you stand this guy with the others (see the group shot at the end of this review). And check out those insane details on the teeth and the spots on the body. It couldn’t have been a quick job to paint these toys.

And the Old Sculpt

Each pack included one of the new designs and one of the old designs. Rather than say nothing useful I’m just gonna show you guys pics of the new toy that was in the pack and direct you to my two Snot Beast designs that are already on the site (first review, second review). The only major difference is that this one is glossy while the earlier figures were not glossy.

Closing Thoughts

Beautiful work! I love these sculpts, the paint is great, and the price is ridiculously low. I’ve got nothing but praise for the Snot Beast series and recommend that anyone with even a mild interest in resin toys keep an eye on this line and try to score one. This is a fantastic introduction to the world of resin toys and I’m sure hoping we’ll see a third version before the end of the year.

Philip Reed hopes that more of these resin toys are released so that everyone who missed them gets a chance to own at least one. The artist may not have a huge following, but he’s putting out some fun designs at low prices and he deserves to succeed. Great stuff!
