Review – Star Wars Monster Mash-Ups Stormtrooper

Line: Star Wars * Manufacturer: Funko * Year: 2010

I am not a bobblehead fan but I am a Stormtrooper fan, so when I saw this Monster Mash-Ups Stormtrooper* I was torn: Was I ready to buy a bobblehead? Well, the answer turned out to be “Yes” . . . twice!

Funko Returns

I don’t have a lot of experience with Funko, and it has only been over the last few months that I’ve played with any of their toys (Pop! Ad Icons Franken Berry review here, Franken Berry Blox review here), but they’re a known company and I often see their stuff on shelves. But since a lot of their work seems to be in bobbleheads I rarely pay much attention to the company; that needs to change, because they seem to grab some great licenses, but it probably won’t since I’ve not been entirely happy with their work.

And that “less than happy” feeling extends to this Monster Mash-Ups Stormtrooper* bobblehead. Neither one is a bad toy (see below), but both feel a little rushed in production and the paint apps are a little sloppy and not even as good as we see on several mass-market action figures.

Available in Two Sizes

The bobblehead was released in a 4.25-inch and a 7-inch edition, which meant that even though it’s not a masterpiece I had to grab both when I saw how inexpensive they are. And both of them are now standing proudly with other Stormtroopers in my collection. It’s unfortunate that Funko didn’t use different sculpts for the two different sizes, but if you’re as much of a Stormtrooper fan as I am you need to be aware that these two sizes exist. But trust me, you only want one of them and don’t need both.

Closing Thoughts

Zombie and Stormtrooper collectors who don’t mind mashing the two together will likely be happy with one of these toys on their shelf, but the semi-sloppy work involved in the paint — take a closer look at the photos — has me suggesting that you grab one and not two of the bobbleheads. What we have here is an acceptable collectible that looks good on the shelf but it’s not a spectacular work. No, the truly spectacular Stormtrooper work we’re going to see today is scheduled to post at battlegrip.com later on this Halloween morning.

Philip Reed still doesn’t love bobbleheads but that doesn’t stop him from wanting this Franken Berry Bobble Car*. He is very sad.

  1. See this is the sort of thing I have to physically stop myself from collecting. When I was younger, I grabbed everything that remotely interested me and ended up with no space or money and a few things that really weren’t that cool. I’ve since trained myself not to simply grab up anything that is labelled Star Wars, Transformers or G.I. Joe while yelling “Mine!” I’d make an excellent Orange Lantern…
