Review – Star Wars Vehicle Collection Slave I (Jango Fett Version)

Line: Star Wars * Year: 2010

While at Toy Tokyo last week I grabbed two of the blind box Star Wars Vehicle Collection packs for $12/each. I had seen these in Hong Kong back in January, but like an idiot I left them there and didn’t buy any. Well, maybe that was the right move because now that I’ve opened one of these boxes I find myself wanting more of these small, well-produced Star Wars spaceship models. Slave I here was the perfect toy to grab because it’s fantastic and has me itching to open the second box . . . and maybe even try to find some more boxes.

A Great Display Piece

Slave I came packed with a small display stand and two posts and with just these parts there are dozens of ways you can display the ship. Take a look at the photos and notice all of the sockets in the display stand; the posts snap down into those and fit snuggly but not so tight that it’s tough to move the post around on the stand. That honeycomb of sockets looks a little strange, but the number of display options is so high I’m willing to ignore all the holes. And besides, once you notice the ship the stand is the last thing that you want to look at.

Excellent Sculpt and Paint

A lot of the reason I now find myself anxious to open the second box (besides the fact that I pulled Slave I on the first try) is that the actual toy itself is really an impressive work of art. As you can see in the photos this is a great little Slave I, and I don’t know if it was a CAD model or hand-sculpted work but either way it looks right to me. And the paint, while minimal, looks good. Especially when you keep in mind that the ship is just a little over 2-inches long.

Is It Worth $12?

That’s a really tough call. On the one hand it is a very fun tiny starship; those maneuvering foils on the side move and you can even move the tiny guns (but doing that too often is a bad idea; you have to snap those on when you open the box and they are really freaking small) so overall it’s a cool spaceship toy. But it’s so small that $12 feels high. If it was $6 or so I’d be chasing down cases of the things, but at $12/each I think I may be happy owning just two of them . . . but that all depends on what I pull in the second box.

I can see the hardcore Star Wars fans going nuts for these — I grabbed boxes from the fourth series so there are already a lot of ships to choose from — but casual collectors may want to just buy a couple of boxes and then be done with them.

Philip Reed now kinda wants the Boba Fett Slave I to go with this Jango Fett version. That’s just stupid. Someone should slap him.

  1. I really didn’t need to see this, I swore off Star Wars merch a couple years back. The detail looks excellent though.

… I can’t seem to find a checklist for the series, if they made the capital ships, I’m done for.

  2. I looked : (

No Nebulon B Frigate, so I’m ok.

That cowled Y-Wing is right out of Joe Johnston’s sketchbook though. So maybe not ok.

Growing up with non-sport trading cards has made me incredibly susceptible to Gashapon in all its forms.
