Review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sewer Cruiser

In addition to the new action figures out in stores (see my Ooze Launchin’ Leo review) the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vehicles are also out there. I found this Sewer Cruiser at Target and it’s quite nice and yet one more example of why the new TMNT line (Amazon.com search*) appears to be selling so well in stores.

Assemble the Sewer Cruiser

The toy comes in six parts — the surfboard, seatback, handlebars, cycle, and two barrels — and you have to snap all of the pieces together and then apply two stickers to get the toy ready for play. All of the pieces fit together cleanly and the assembly process may have taken me as long as two minutes; I think it took me longer to apply the two stickers to the barrels than it took to snap all of the parts together. Quick and easy assembly, exactly what I like to see in a toy designed for kids.

Great Colors!

As you can see in the photos, the Sewer Cruiser* has some really fun colors going on, with everything about the color choices screaming toy. I especially love the contrast between the surfboard and the barrels and almost all of the colors come from the plastic; the few paint apps are the green of the light and sides of the gas tank and the silver and orange on the front of the vehicle.

Mutagen Ooze Play Feature

As with the Ooze Launchin’ Leo action figure (review here) the Sewer Cruiser is part of the new Mutagen Ooze series and if you buy some ooze you can load it in the cooler on the back of the toy and then spill ooze by flipping the cooler back (see the pics, below). Also as with Ooze Launchin’ Leo the toy comes with three plastic globs that can be used in place of the ooze; the plastic bits are less messy, but I’m also willing to bet that they’re not as much fun as the ooze.

Great Value Toys

I really think that one of the reasons the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys (Amazon.com search*) are doing so well in stores is that the toys are really great values for the money, especially when you compare them to other toys on shelves. I paid $10 for the Sewer Cruiser, just a buck more than a Turtles action figure and the same price as one of the new G.I. Joe action figures, and that $10 got me a lot of toy. Just look at the size of the thing!

Closing Thoughts

Good price, fun colors, a goofy design, everything about the Sewer Cruiser* just carries forward the fun of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line and makes me think I’ll see the toy selling just as well as the other releases in the line. And since it both has a wheel on the bottom for hard floors and it floats kids can play with this thing all kinds of places, and it’s playing with the toys that will have kids wanting them for many more months to go.

I’ve no idea how long this line will stay strong, but if Playmates keeps releasing this much fun in boxes I hope they can continue for many years to come.

  1. Just picked up a Leo from this set yesterday and i can deffinatly tell why this series was on so many peoples Best Of lists.

Great articulation, great materials, great price, really hit it out of the park. Might even have to grab the new shell van.

  2. $10 for just the Sewer Cruiser? I’m actually a bit stunned. I feel as if this were a Hasbro release, the cost would be anywhere from $15-$20.

  3. @Z Foundation – I strongly believe the low price of the new TMNT toys in relation to anything else on the market is part of why the line is selling so well.
