Review – ‘Toon Tumblers Iron Man (NYCC)

Line: Marvel * Year: 2008

More than once now I’ve mentioned that Gina and I kinda collect glasses. Coca Cola, 7-Up, cool glasses from the fifties, and more fill our cabinets, but we don’t really have a way to properly display them so they sit all alone and unloved.

Well, in an attempt to pay a little attention to the glasses I thought it might be fun to pull down this ‘Toon Tumblers Iron Man glass that was a New York Comic Con exclusive back in 2008. I bought mine at a comic store in Austin for $12, so just what “exclusive” means these days is a discussion for another time. For now let’s just take a quick peek at this illustrated glass.

Heavy Duty Tumbler

Thick, high-quality glass makes this a piece that feels good and hefty when you pick it up. I hate thin glasses — I always feel like I’m gonna break them — so the fact that this is a thick glass makes me very happy. It’s got a great sound when you set it down on a table, and there’s no chance you’re gonna break this . . . unless you drop it. But that’s just a risk of glass glasses. And at about 6-inches tall this is a full-sized glass and not just a tiny little display piece; if you wanted to you could totally use this for your milk and cookies. Assuming you wanna drink a lot of milk.

Fantastic Artwork

But what made me grab this glass at first wasn’t the quality of the glass. No, it was the great Iron Man artwork that completely wraps around the glass. The mix of colored line art with B&W line art looks great, and I’ve gotta say that I now want to find more glasses from this series because this one looks truly incredible.

I went ahead and snapped shots from a few different angles just so that you could get a really good look at the glass. I know, photos of illustrated glasses is about as nerdy as I can get but we’ll just keep this a secret and not let anyone else know.

Closing Thoughts

There’s really not much I can say when it comes to this Iron Man glass. I mean, realistically in the end it comes down to: it’s a glass. Yes, it’s a heavy-duty glass, but it’s still just a glass. And I think I posted enough photos that there’s no question what it looks like.

So enjoy the shots, and be thankful that you’re not as sad as I am. I mean, you don’t collect various illustrated glasses, right?

Philip Reed should post a review of one of the really old glasses in the house, just because it’s fun to post reviews of unusual things.
