Review – Transformers: Power of the Primes “Roadtrap”
After our recent look at Battleslash (review posted here), I thought it best if we also get Roadtrap*, the second half of the new Duocon team, in front of the camera and onto the site. This, combined with Battleslash, is Hasbro’s upgrade to the 1987 Battletrap toy (reviewed here) . . . and it is a great upgrade!
Alt Mode
Roadtrap*, just like his companion, Battleslash*, doesn’t have the greatest of vehicle modes. It’s a nice update to the 1987 Battletrap blue truck, sure, but there were design choices made by the Hasbro staff that resulted in a less-than-perfect toy truck.
The below photo showing the rear of Roadtrap* in truck mode is all you need to see to understand why I think this alt mode isn’t the best Transformers toy truck of the year. That’s a lot of wrongness on the tail-end of that toy, and it’s only the robot mode as well as the combined Battletrap mode that has me saying: You should totally buy both Roadtrap* and Battleslash*.
Robot Mode
Once transformed from truck mode to robot mode, Roadtrap* becomes a much more attractive toy. As with Battleslash (review here), the proportions are a bit strange, but that doesn’t stop the robot mode from being a lot of fun to play with. Those giant feet are funny as hell, but they make a lot more sense once you combine the two robots into Battletrap.
Closing Thoughts
A fun transformation design, a great Duocon concept update, and playable robot mode all combine to make Roadtrap* — as well as Battleslash* — two of my favorite releases so far in the Power of the Primes toyline. I hope sales of the Power of the Primes* series has been strong enough that Hasbro continues their current design trends; it’s awesome to see a second wave of Transformers toys that feel more playable and fun than many of the designs we saw from Hasbro in the earlier part of this decade.
