Review – “Trap Jaw” Snot Beast

oOMoSOo’s (blog, Flickr, Etsy) Snot Beast resin toy is back, but this time around he’s a special custom job that was sent to me as a surprise gift. And a real surprise this little guy was, because I received the package and then didn’t open it until weeks later. When the little “Trap Jaw” Snot Beast rolled out of the box I was quite happy and shocked; it’s a good thing he doesn’t need feeding or the little guy would have died before I even knew he was in the house.

Built on the Snot Beast v2 base (see my v2 review here), the “Trap Jaw” custom has a hook in place of one of his hands and the Masters of the Universe-inspired custom toy even has the necessary trap-like lower jaw that makes him unmistakably identifiable to most any boy of the eighties. This review is totally biased because Steve (better known as oOMoSOo) just sent this to me without any warning. Man, I love running battlegrip.com because it gives me an excuse to play with toys about every day and because so many toy artists out there are generous guys who give me wonderful toys like this.

Postal Pain

The poor Snot Beast, as you can see, suffered a little damage on his journey to my house and now his hook is bent. I tried to straighten the hook as best I could, but it’s so thin and fragile that in the end I felt it best to leave things alone. Better the guy have a bent hook than a broken hook, right?

This Isn’t a Review!

Okay, I am certainly not fooling anyone. This “Trap Jaw” Snot Beast post is not at all a review; if this was a review I’d be poking at the toy’s paint and sculpt and making unusual and bizarre comments. But since I made all of those when I reviewed the v2 (review here) and two times with the basic, original toy (first review, second review) then this is just me chattering and posting photos. And at the very least I hope you’re enjoying the photos.

Closing Thoughts

Though he may be tiny, the “Trap Jaw” Snot Beast is a fantastic resin toy and a great custom job. This entire Snot Beast series is the unsung champion of the 2010 resin toy scene — I named this the best resin toy of 2010 (awards post here) — and I suggest that you keep your eyes open for new releases in the series. This one may have been free, but the others in the series have been competitively priced and the more of them you assemble the cooler they look.

Great paint, neat sculpt, excellent concept, and an unexpected gift all come together to make this exactly what I like to find in the mail. But then who would be upset about finding a free custom toy in the mail?

Philip Reed sometimes wonders if anyone enjoys the custom toy reviews. After all, it’s not as if anyone can use these reviews to make a decision on whether or not to buy a toy; by their very nature custom toys are one-of-a-kind and unavailable by the time Philip reviews them. Thoughts?
