Saturday Morning Cereal Time . . . in a Haunted House?
So at some point Sugar Smacks was renamed to simply Smacks. I assume this was an attempt to fool parents into thinking that Sugar Smacks were now somehow healthy, but there’s no way anyone would ever fall for that trick. Right?
Actually, let’s have some fun and run a quick search . . . here’s the info straight from Wikipedia:
“Introduced in 1953, the cereal has undergone several name changes. It started out as Sugar Smacks. In the 1980s, it was renamed Honey Smacks. In the early 1990s, perhaps because the product mascot, Dig’em Frog, had customarily been portrayed as calling the cereal “Smacks”, the word “Honey” was dropped from the name and the product was then simply called Smacks. In 2004, the cereal was given back the name Honey Smacks, which is now its current name. It is known in Mexico as SMAK.”
So what we have here is a commercial from the time after the cereal was known as Honey Smacks and before the time the cereal was renamed Honey Smacks. What is this, a soap opera cereal story?
Now when I was a kid in the seventies they were for sure called SUPER Sugar Smacks but I always preferred Freakies.
