Seven Christmas Gifts for Star Wars Fans
The holidays are almost here, and if your Christmas list includes a Star Wars fan then today’s battlegrip.com feature is sure to save you some time. The seven items listed on this Christmas guide are all easy to find and range in price from under $15 to over $100, meaning that you’re certain to find something in your price range. Enjoy!
Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide*
I own several different “Ultimate Visual Guide” books, and each is a serious treat for fans of whichever property is being explored. The upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide*, set for release on December 16, is certain to be an incredible look at the characters, creatures, vehicles, weapons, and worlds of the new Rogue One movie. And when it comes to Christmas gifts, what makes this book an excellent choice is the fact that it is so new that none of us own it yet. I know I want a copy once it is released, and I am willing to bet that the Star Wars fan on your Christmas list would love to unwrap this book on Christmas morning.
Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game*
Probably the best thing about Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game* is that the game is so quick to learn — and plays so fast — that even casual gamers get wrapped up and excited in the game. I have no idea how many expansion packs have been released, but there’s mini starships for everyone, regardless of your favorite affiliation: Empire, Rebellion, or even bounty hunters. The basic game* is where you start, but once you get into the game then there’s no telling where you’ll end up. Don’t forget to grab a playmat* to make the game just a little more fun.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: Boba Fett Bust Bank*
As much an inexpensive statue as it is a bank, this Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: Boba Fett Bust Bank* from Diamond Select Toys is one of several different banks the company has released over the years. These look great displayed alone or in a group, and the low price makes it tempting to grab multiple designs and craft an entire display of the banks.
Boba Fett, now that I think about it, would likely support a Christmas shopping guide all on his own. There’s probably exactly such a list already out there; the character is far more popular than he deserves to be, if I am being honest, but I am definitely not complaining. Hey, the armor design is awesome.
R2-Q5 Imperial Astromech Droid*
Wanna grab a Star Wars fan something truly amazing? Check out this Sideshow Collectibles R2-Q5 Imperial Astromech Droid* that was designed for their series of 12-inch scale action figures. The toy may cost close to $140, but it is remarkably-detailed and all of Sideshow’s work is high-quality and perfectly produced. Unless your Star Wars fan has shelves and shelves of high-end action figures on display he’s unlikely to own this, making the little droid a great gift.
WARNING: This could also serve as a gateway toy and lead to collecting the pricey Sideshow 12-inch scale Star Wars action figures.
The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Star Wars Action Figures, 1977-1985*
Mark Bellomo’s The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Star Wars Action Figures, 1977-1985* is the only book a Kenner Star Wars fan absolutely must own. There are several books about Kenner’s Star Wars toys of the seventies and eighties, but Mark’s is a masterpiece of entertainment and loaded with toy info and pics as well as character info and fun tidbits of behind-the-scenes information. I own many of Mark’s books, and I think I can safely say that this one gets more attention than any other (with his Ultimate Transformers Guide* a close second).
The only real danger of this book is that it inspires someone to start collecting the vintage Star Wars action figures and vehicles. That means this book does carry a warning: Avoid if you don’t want to suddenly find yourself shopping for single figures that cost way more than you may expect.
Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual Chronicle*
There’s a newer version of this book out there, but I’ve got the 2010 edition of Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual Chronicle* and can happily report that it will keep any Star Wars fan entertained for an entire weekend . . . if not longer! And the older edition can be found pretty cheap, making this a lot of gift for not a lot of bucks.
The book shows news, product releases, and info about cast and crew for each year from the seventies through publication, making it a great reference and tool if you wanna find out exactly when a particular book was published or what toys were released during a single year. Fun book and this might be the only item on this list you should grab even if you’re not a Star Wars hardcore fan. The historical info is a real treat.
Star Wars: Empire vs Rebellion*
Last item on our short Christmas list for Star Wars fans is the two-player game, Star Wars: Empire vs Rebellion*. Based on Cold War: CIA vs KGB, this small game is a fantastic stocking stuffer and is a lot of fun. It’s a mix of luck, strategy, and bluffing as players take one of the two sides in the war and compete over cards for control. I have actually bought the game twice since I lost my first copy, which I believe demonstrates just what a fun game it is.
And there it is, seven Star Wars items that all make fun Christmas gifts. As a bonus, you may also want to consider giving a copy of my Collect These Figures and Accessories* book for the holidays. This is a book of newspaper ads from the seventies and eighties, and anyone who was a kid when Star Wars was new will instantly get lost in these old ads.
