Spawn Nitro Riders Announcement from 2000

Today I’m sharing a scan from the January, 2000 issue of Lee’s Action Figure News & Toy Review (Amazon.com search*) because these classic Spawn Nitro Riders toys (Amazon.com search*) have interested me for years. I’ve never owned these, but looking at this page makes me wonder why I didn’t try and buy at least one of them when they were new.

I suspect my reason to skip the line at the time was a lack of enough money to buy random and weird toys. In January of 2000 we had just moved to Texas so that I could take a position at Steve Jackson Games. Hard to believe how I’m still where I was fifteen years ago . . . but in a completely different position and with a lot more experience. Less free time, sure, but way more responsibility, authority, and a hell of a lot more fun.

  1. I had one, they were articulated PVC for the most part, so while the design and paint apps were excellent, the execution wasn’t that great. And the riders were kind of floppy. Still some of the best Articulated figures ever produced by Todd, they just didn’t really hit the mark, despite being produced in massive numbers and multiple color-ways.

Also they were really just toys, no backstory to speak of, no license, just weird post-apocalyptic motorcycle riders.

  2. “they were articulated PVC for the most part,” All of McFarlane’s figures were just that, but the paint apps, figure design and concepts were amazing.
Sure the plastic was cheap and would snap like twigs sometimes but they really weren’t meant to be played with. Their core audience was adult collectors.
