Spotted Online – 16bit’s SDCC Battle Beasts Gallery

I never did take time to really look at the Battle Beasts display at San Diego Comic Con, but Adam over at 16bit was all over the Diamond Select Toys booth and has posted a gallery of pics for those of us who are curious but didn’t get to see the toys. A mix of neat, eh, and ug were on display . . . I’m still not sure this line is going to succeed. I’m afraid everything is going to depend on how well the comic performs; the new toys are just too little like the classic eighties Battle Beasts for me to see many older fans really taking to the new Minimates-based series.

  1. It is a sign of the times that to make a profit, toy companies visit the past instaed of going forward into the future. I started collecting action figures because one company, McFarlane, raised the bar and lept into a future where Boys Action Category products were well designed, painted, edgy, and just plain cool. After Todd gave us Spawn, then other companies saw the light. I am sure there is great product still to be made, but visiting the silly past of Boys Action blows. If you must do it, than make it bigger and better, PLEASE!

  2. The “silly past”? I’m sorry, but nostalgia is very important to some people, and the only reason many are even partially interested in these. Nostalgia is the reason Batman, Superman, Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Spiderman, etc etc are still going strong.

  3. DST only holds the rights to the name, so these aren’t going to look like the classic line. As a line of animal-inspired warrior figures I think they look pretty cool, especially the scorpion and spider. I’m much more likely to buy these than what Takara is putting out, but I’m a minimates guy.

  4. Honestly the designs are neat, the characters look fun, but … That’s when the reality sets in about the those joints, they’re awful and bulky. These figures would be killer as larger toys, but mini mates not so much.

I think they took what could be really fun, slapped it on a generic body and made a very blah product that is only capable of mild success.
I know I won’t be buying, not when takara has much better figures out there.

  5. Yeah, cause those goofy looking blocks with arms are much better. I’ll at least buy a few of these Minimate offerings. Because I enjoy Vhorren quite a bit. The Takara stuff has no place in my collection, those just came out ugly.
