Spotted Online – Buck Rogers Laserscope Fighter

I may be most interested in the Mego Buck Rogers Star Fighter, but that hasn’t stopped me from looking at all of those older vehicles and action figures. One of the very first things we learn when poking at those old Mego toys is that the Laserscope Fighter just does not get the best of reviews. A strange “viewfinder” feature and unusual appearance make this look to be one of the cheapest Buck Rogers vehicles to buy, and posts like this one by John Kenneth Muir make me unsure as to whether I should be excited by the design . . . or sad that such a thing even exists.

I’m leaning toward “excited by the design,” if only because the starship looks so very odd that I can’t help but be drawn to its strangeness. Click through to read more about the toy, and for something totally unexpected and fun (I just never really followed Mego as a kid) don’t miss the reuse of this design: Released in Italy was the Laserscope Fighter as a toy for Disney’s Black Hole movie. Toymania.com has the story.

Great. Now I want to track down that Black Hole version.

  1. I’ve always thought the mirror/targeting gimmick was pretty cool, but the overall shape of the toy is poor. I wish they’d taken more care in designing the body style.
