Spotted Online – David Fincher, R2-D2, Slavery, and Star Wars Episode VII

Okay, if the Yahoo TV headline doesn’t grab attention then I don’t know what’s popular on the internet these days. David Fincher calls R2-D2 and C-3PO ‘slaves’ and explains why he’s not making ‘Episode VII’

In an interview with the director, Fincher points out that in Star Wars those popular stars of all six films — R2-D2 and C-3PO — are slaves to their owners and are forced to go on adventures. Fincher says:

“I always thought of ‘Star Wars’ as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters’ folly, the ultimate folly of man… I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it’s kind of gone by ‘Return Of The Jedi.'”

Well that’s a bit of a downer. But it does instantly make me agree with the idea presented in the Yahoo post that a Fincher-directed Star Wars film could explore some pretty dark territory.

Just imagine if the dead Star Wars 1313 project (see IGN) were handed to Fincher and he was given creative freedom to make a film based on the 1313 concepts. Yeah, I’d pay to see that.
