Spotted Online – G.I. Joe Issue 161 Reviews

IDW has decided to continue the classic Marvel G.I. Joe comic series and I’m still not completely sure why. It’s an interesting idea, but I just cannot get excited by the continued series . . . especially when reviews like these don’t make it sound like it’s all that good.

  • The G.I. Joe fansite Terror Drome review says: “It’s just too much. The bad overwhelms the good. If I hear that this book gets good again, I will pick it up. But, as it stands, I’m done.” That, combined with the details covered in the review, makes me wanna skip the comic.
  • And over at IGN the comic review concludes: “Part of the bizarre charm of this series is that the humor is often so innocent and old-fashioned, yet the violence and general subject matter are clearly geared towards older readers. This unique dynamic works well for the most part, though some of Hama’s dialogue could stand to be a little more snappy and a little less goofy.” No thank you! I’m not picking up G.I. Joe for a bad comedy.

So yeah, for now I’ll pass on this. There’s not enough time to read G.I. Joe funny books that actually try for the “funny” and don’t try to bring us deep, fun stories. I know I’m being unfair in judging the comic based on online reviews, but I haven’t exactly loved IDW’s previous G.I. Joe efforts so they have a giant hill to climb to get me to buy their books.

  1. I hadn’t heard about this, so I was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw this at the shop on Wednesday. I think it’s a good continuation of the Marvel series. I dug it.

  2. Sounds just like my game and i strangely wanna read it now. The old comics were kinda fun, loved how they experimented in like every issue (the first 50 ones) the storytelling and it was quite versatile. Wish the coloring would be like the old ones. Seems they have to hire someone…like… Hehe..
