Spotted Online – Gold Key’s “UFO Flying Saucers” at Monsterbrains
Gold Key was one of those comic imprints that, when I was a kid, always felt like a cheap line of books. Marvel and DC I could get into, but whenever I would run across Gold Key books at garage sales I typically passed them by. Their titles (see Wikipedia) were always TV shows in my experience, but I can promise you that if I had ever run across issues of UFO Flying Saucers I would have immediately changed my mind about Gold Key comics.
Over at the Monster Brains site we find several UFO Flying Saucers covers, and every single one of creepy and gorgeous. According to popmatters.com the book only had 25 issues, which means that the Monster Brains post shares the majority of the covers that were created for the line.
There’s not much info about the series online — that popmatters.com post has the best info I’ve seen about the comics yet — but seeing these covers makes me wish that someone would assemble a book of Gold Key covers. This Google image search for Magnus Robot Fighter covers alone proves that a collection of Gold Key covers would be an incredible book. Want!

Oh wow, these covers are amazing! I love the pulp-style paintings. Some of those UFO magazines in the 1950s had fantastic artwork.
I blogged a random issue a while back: the interior art, as usual for Gold Key, doesn’t hold a candle to the cover. And at least one of the UFO cases mentioned had been discredited since!
