Spotted Online – Kuma Style Unofficial Fortress Maximus Pics
Perfect Effect’s Warden (mentioned here), the company’s unofficial Fortress Maximus, is shipping! I got notice in email this morning that my pre-order is ready to ship, and then I saw this shot at Flickr showing the toy in its “tank” mode. Inspired by the Fortress Maximus design from IDW’s More than Meets the Eye comics (Amazon.com search*), I think the robot is looking great but this alt mode is kinda not-so-sweet. Far, far too blocky and “robot folded up” to be a really great alt mode.

Price aside, I’d rather buy this than the G1 version, but it’s nowhere near the top of my third party wants. To date my only experience with PE is there sleek Arcee analogue, “RC”, and I finally have Aranea on the way, but I’m not too crazy about Warden’s design. It seems like he’s missing something. Maybe he can be improved with Repro Labels. I think maybe he’s too slim. I don’t know, he just doesn’t seem to be bulky enough.
I’m assuming the blockiness of the alt mode is do to his headmaster function. Couldn’t have been easy hiding that large face in there.
@3B – Yeah, I think you’re right that the Headmaster feature is what led to this mode. I think I would have rather they went pure IDW and ignored the Headmaster side of things. IDW touched on Headmasters a few years ago, but I’m not seeing any signs that they plan to get back to the idea again.
I’ve debated about purchasing this Fort Max, but this mode makes me glad I’ve hesitated. But I think my true hesitation is that I really want a Fort Max update closer to his original G1 self, even if it’s smaller in scale. He’s always been one of my favorite Transformers characters.
