Spotted Online – Learning to Love POP!
Funko’s POP! Vinyl toy series (Amazon.com search*) keeps getting bigger and bigger, with so many toys in the collection that I couldn’t even begin to imagine collecting them all. But I also couldn’t see myself not buying these; the toys are far too well-crafted and adorable for me to ignore their existence.
And what shocks me is the number of times I run into someone who passes on the POP! Vinyl series, seeing them as somehow less than toys because the pieces are limited in articulation and the designs are very cute. Strange, because I believe that every toy collection needs some variety and that adorable toys mixed in with more detailed and realistic sculpts makes for a great visual on any toy shelf.
Fortunately, there are also those who eventually discover the joys of the POP! Vinyl line, as proven in this Tomopop post. Just wanted to say it’s taken a great effort to steer clear of these things myself, they all look so cool and adorable that I know buying 1 would lead to WAY more of them.
@Rexplode – Buying one should be safe. Two? Yeah, you’re doomed.
I’d feel a lot better about them if they could get a handle on their quality.
@stack32 – I think the paint quality has come up quite a bit over the last year or so. If you’ve not looked at the newer ones take a peek the next time you see them.
I have picked up a few despite my reservations. The Marvel ones seem a little better but the Star Trek POPs I saw in B&N were pretty awful. I bought a Mass Effect Shepard online and the paint was bad and it had glue all over it. I think Funko’s average might be improving but they still let stuff go that other companies would throw in the trash.
