Spotted Online – Maketoys’ Unofficial Transformers Swerve and Gears
Unofficial Transformers manufacturer Maketoys is releasing their own unofficial Swerve and Gears toys, stacking more characters we’ve already got on what’s becoming an over-crowded marketplace. I predict that we’re within one year of a third party crash — the current buyers simply cannot sustain these prices and number of releases forever — and I strongly suspect that within two to three years this will be seen as the “Golden Age” for third party collectors.
But I’ll enjoy this while it’s happening, especially when the tformers.com image makes me think that these will be the best of all of the Gears and Swerve toys that have been released so far. I love that those vehicle modes are so very outlandish and different from the iGear and SXS Gears and Swerve toys. And here’s hoping that Maketoys gets the colors right. Please!

There are so many Transformers toys they could tackle, yet we get multiple versions of Swerve in one year. I’m still waiting for someone to attempt a modernized G1-style line of Pretenders, with shells that have greater articulation!
@Kevin – I want Pretender shells as add-ons for official Hasbro releases. And I still want a Classics Bumblebee trailer that turns into a helicopter pack. That set should also include a G1 toy-like Bumblebee head.
I have no idea why these companies all make the same characters.
Swerve is a little understandable, I suppose, since he’s been a breakout character in the recent comic books. But were there two, three versions of Predaking last year? A couple of Devastators in the last few years? I can understand the companies wanting to invest in more popular characters, but you also see a lot of more obscure names. Sometimes it’s just like they’re all thinking in unison.
The number of Predakings is truly ridiculous. I can understand everyone wanting to tackle smaller (therefore cheaper… usually) characters like Swerve, but I have to wonder if these 3rd Party companies pay attention to things like Toy Fair. I think sales of unofficial Swerve figures are going to be hurt when Hasbro releases their own update at domestic retail.
Why would you pay $60 for an admittedly cool and unique version of a character when you can buy the official release for around $10?
