Spotted Online – Masters of the Universe Classics Optikk Review at Dork Dimension
My Optikk will take a little more time to reach me, so for now I’ve gotta be happy with online reviews of the toy. I just hope that the next review I see is more favorable than this review at Dork Dimension. Ouch, Nate doesn’t seem to love the look of the toy as much as I do . . . and since he has actually held one and I haven’t his word carries way more weight than mine.
One of Nate’s biggest complaints with the toy (besides price, constantly-reused parts, and poor quality control) is with the character’s most distinctive characteristic; yep, Nate dislikes how Mattel handled the giant eyeball after people began to focus on their competitor’s product.
“Optikk is a figure who you’d think would have coolness that is un-screw-uppable. A robotic space mutated eyeball? How can you possibly screw up that idea?”
“Here’s how: drop the ball on the primary aspect that makes him cool, namely his eyeball. As I mentioned before, Optikk’s eyeball-head is pretty much just a ping pong ball with an iris and a cornea. To make it really cool, they needed to play up the disgusting nature of the eyeball (like Oculus Orbus from the Madballs line) with veins wrapping around the eye leading to an optic nerve in the back. Maybe the iris of the alternate eye could have been a different shape, too. A vertical cat shape would have been awesome, but maybe a horizontal horse shape would have been even more so.”
Okay, I think Nate is onto something here. A more disgusting eye with more detail would have looked very cool. So how much time will pass before someone starts offering new eyeball heads as replacement parts? There are already some custom Masters of the Universe Classics accessories on the market — see Poe Ghostal’s site for a look at two of Spy Monkey Creation’s custom accessories — so it wouldn’t be unusual for someone to offer us a new eye.
For some reason I put Scareglow’s head on Optikk’s body too, just to see what it looked like.
Anyway, I was not impressed with Optikk from the pre-release photos, and then I only purchased him because I was already buying Mer-man. However, I think he is awesome. The eyes look better to me in person than any of the photos made them appear. I’m definitely partial to the orange eye right now, but you’ll never know how I’ll feel next week.
I don’t want you to worry too much about Nate’s review, if you’ve been excited about getting him just wait until you have him in hand.
Yeah, keep in mind that I’m in the minority. Chances are, you’ll really like the figure.
Besides, maybe my review lowered your expectations to the point that when you actually get him, you’ll be impressed. 🙂
I really like Optikk, I find no fault with their design. I think the eyeball came out fine. Then again, I am a schill for Matty. Oh well.
