Spotted Online – Mini Guide to Making Vinyl Toys

You may have noticed that battlegrip.com was offline earlier this week. A WordPress update combined with my lack of technical expertise took the site down, and it was only a dozen or so hours later that things came back online. The site failure reminded me just how much I dislike trusting the internet (I sure am glad I’ve been creating books) and I took a little time to look at options.

I’ve explored the Medium site before, and while digging a little deeper into the site this week I ran across a post I thought many of you would find entertaining: A mini guide to create your own vinyl toys.

Written by Camilo Bejarano of Ph7labs, this is one artist’s look at what it takes to translate an idea into a vinyl toy. The article at Medium touches on each stage briefly, offering some suggestions but no concrete data on manufacturing costs. That’s unfortunate, because I believe that if there had been links to the factory selected, details on costs (including unexpected expenses), and specific information on the process of selling the finished toy this would have been a perfect post.

As it is this is quite enjoyable, and I suggest checking it out if you want a glimpse as toymaking today. You won’t learn everything, but this is enough of a starting point that if you’re excited you can easily start exploring the web for more info.

Oh. And the Medium site? I may run a few tests there in the future . . .

  1. Thanks for posting this article! I’ve been thinking a ton about sculpting up some robots lately, and it would be really cool to actually have them made, for real. Stuff like this just really makes me happy about this crazy hobby!
