Spotted Online – USA Today and Masters of the Universe
Here’s one that you may have missed. A little over a week ago USA Today posted He-Man continues to pack a powerful punch 30 years later, an article in which our favorite “Masters” get some positive press that celebrates thirty years of fun and looks ahead to new toys and comics. My absolute favorite line is also one of the most honest I’ve seen in a long time:
But by the power of Grayskull — and the power of nostalgia — MOTU continues to hang around for the adults who grew up with it.
Yep. This is a line for those oldies (like me) who were children of the eighties. Even the series a decade ago — the DVD on Amazon is a steal for under $10* — didn’t have the same level of popularity that the line did in the eighties. And I think that’s a lot of the reason why the line seems to be doing okay for Mattel as an online exclusive; adults have disposable income and adult collectors are willing to drop way more for a toy than children — or the non-collecting-parents of children — ever will.
So check the story and then celebrate the fact that the internet allows us to use our disposable income to buy toys that just simply wouldn’t exist if we didn’t have net access.
