Star Wars Animation Cells in 1995
Out of Topps’ Star Wars Galaxy magazine (find at Amazon.com*) comes this full-page advertisement offering animation cells from the Droids and Ewoks cartoons that were, at that time, each a decade old. I’ve never been one to collect animation cells, but if I ever ran across that Droids cell of the speeder over weird lava I’d totally grab it! That illustration is awesome!

Wait–is the speeder from Droids or the Holiday Special?
@Jay – It looks Holiday Special to me, but the ad claims Droids. It has been so long since I saw Droids that I cannot say for sure.
Please note that these are not animation cells but reproductions of animation cells (or seri-cels as the ad calls them). You can get a similar piece by xeroxing an image onto an overhead transparency.
I have a few animation cells from other cartoons that were actual production cells. The thing that strikes me the most about them is how unfinished some of the backs are. Admittedly, the backs were never meant to be seen, but I always think its cool to see how things never meant for mass consumption are handled. It really blows my mind that these used to be hand painted 30 per second. Its an amazing bit of history.
It dawned on me that some of the scenes from the holiday show could have been re-used, so the ad might be correct after all. I guess I should track down the show and find out!
