“Star Wars Toys’ Success Shocking”
I’ve talked before about how incredibly successful Kenner was with their Star Wars action figures. Sansweet’s fun From Concept to Screen to Collectible* tells us that Kenner sold over 40,000,000 toys during the line’s first year, a number we can compare against this Kentucky New Era article from November 29, 1979. The AP article, by Andy Lippman, talks about Kenner’s success with the toys but then goes on to say that Star Wars will need a lot of successful movies to equal Play-Doh sales.
“Kenner officials note that a Star Wars movie sequel should keep sales booming, but it will take a lot of movies to equal the success the company has enjoyed with Play-Doh, still going strong after 24 years.”
I’m now left wondering if Star Wars toy sales have surpassed Play-Doh sales.
