“The Galaxy’s Greatest Card Game — Now at ToysRUs” in 1996

Decipher’s Star Wars CCG of the nineties (find at Amazon.com*) found an entirely new audience when Parker Brothers worked with the company to create the “Introductory Two-Player Game,” a boxed set designed for mass market shelves. I shared a 1997 ad for that box set earlier this year, but today’s ad pre-dates that other one and points people directly at ToysRUs.

This odd strikes me as unusual because it is driven at mass market buyers and appears in an issue of InQuest magazine. I am pretty sure that anyone buying InQuest in 1996 didn’t need an introduction to the Star Wars CCG; the magazine ran several strategy articles, sample decks, and advertisements for the game and its expansions. What did Decipher and Parker Brothers gain by running this ad in InQuest?

  1. I actually had this set back then. A couple friends and I tried to play it a few times, but we could never figure out the rules. I eventually gave it to a classmate that was into CCG’s.

    1. @Stunt Zombie – The CCG makers in the nineties were not good at writing rulebooks. If we had had YouTube when this game was new, I think there would be fewer stories like yours.
