The is the World of the Micronauts in 1978

After the announcement last week that Hasbro would be relaunching the Micronauts series next year (mentioned here), I decided to poke a little at YouTube and watch some Micronauts videos. The absolute best of the bunch has to be this commercial from 1978.

Man, I hope Hasbro’s new Micronauts toys are in 3.75-inch scale and feature interchangeable parts. Just imagine what we’ll be able to do if these are the same scale as the G.I. Joe, Star Wars, and Marvel Universe action figures that Hasbro produces. I know some people are already saying they won’t buy the new Micronauts figures if they’re in 3.75-inch scale but the opposite is true for me; I’m 100% certain to buy at least one or two figures if they’re 3.75-inch and less likely to buy any if they’re larger than that.

Hopefully Hasbro will have some news soon. I’m sure we’ll hear/see something at the New York Toy Fair in February, but I’d like to have news before then.

I wonder if we’ll get a new Micronauts comic next year.

For a really negative opinion about the return of Micronauts don’t miss Hasbro Has Lost Their Minds at Topless Robot.

“So why do I think Hasbro is crazy? Because no one gives a Skywalk about the Micronauts nowadays. Sure, there’s those dozen insane and insanely vocal fans that every franchise has, but Micronauts doesn’t have anything near the pull of a Star Wars or Transformers or even Indiana Jones. This was proven pretty decisively when Palisades released a batch of Micronauts toys to absolutely zero sales or acclaim in the early ’00s, one of the many, many things that bankrupted an otherwise awesome toy company.”

There’s some truth in that, but I think that Micronauts, with the right marketing and promotion and interchangeable parts, could do well today. It’s really all going to depend on what Hasbro does with the property. A comic won’t do it; this needs an animated series on Cartoon Network to really succeed.

Should be an interesting event, regardless of the outcome.
