The Met and Public Domain Artworks

The Metropolitain Museum of Art has released 375,000 images from their collection into the public domain, meaning that researchers, artists, authors, designers, bloggers, and anyone with an interest in art now has available a library of fabulous images to use with any project. This is a fabulous gift to the world, and if I am not careful I’ll lose days of my life to searching the archives.

One example image, Christmas-Time, The Blodgett Family by Eastman Johnson, is shown below, but this barely scratches the available images. I’ll have to run a concentrated search for images of ancient toys; there is no telling what amazing items are hiding in the collection.

  1. My wife and I love the Met–we try to get in a visit every time we’re in NYC. I shared this news a few days ago with one of my Google Plus communities as a resource for gameable RPG material. Fun stuff!

  2. This is fantastic. Was lucky enough to visit the Met for a few hours when I was in NYC last year, and it was amazing. Just sad I didn’t have more time to spend there!
