“The Mystery Behind Darth Vader’s Proesthetic Armour”
As a kid, around 1982 or so (it was between Empire and Jedi) I remember being told that Darth Vader was wounded and changed when he fell into a volcano. Where the kid who told me got that info is something I’ve always wondered, but it has been one of those Star Wars details I’ve carried with me for years. When we saw Revenge of the Sith* the lava scene didn’t shock me at all; by then I’d known for over two decades that Vader was once in a volcano.
But just where did that story start? Theforce.net offers us Injuries of Darth Vader, which lays a lot of the backstory that fits in nicely with the Vader and the volcano story. And adding to that situation is this article from the April, 1981 issue of Fantastic Films. I found this magazine a few weeks ago when Gina and I visited Bankston’s in Waco (posted here), and now it’s time I share “The Mystery Behind Darth Vader’s Proesthetic Armour” — written by Clyde Jones — with all of you.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing this.
I was also told that Vader fell into a volcano during a duel with Obi-Wan, by a friend who claimed his family knew someone who worked on the production of the original trilogy. Nice to see it in print pre-;prequels – clearly it was canon long before it was cinematic canon.
