Todd McFarlane in CMJ New Music Monthly (June, 1999)
CMJ New Music Monthly magazine, according to Wikipedia, ran from 1993 through 2009. A magazine devoted to the music business, it was McFarlane’s work with Korn on the Follow The Leader* album cover that even got him into the magazine in June of 1999. Not surprisingly, the article is very “McFarlane is awesome” and so over-the-top as to be Liefeld-levels of extreme.
McFarlane’s break at Marvel, his launch of Spawn, and his creation of McFarlane Toys are all covered in the brief article, as is word on the sequel to the Spawn film that’s “due out in 2000.” Well, that never quite happened. Still, this quote from McFarlane about the Spawn sequel is very much one of those written treasures that we can all enjoy today:
“What I’m really hoping for is that fans who are really into the HBO stuff, but maybe got turned off by the first movie, will look at what we do with the second film and go, ‘Cool. Todd’s not pandering, and he’s not selling out. He’s getting more sophisticated.'”
