Tonka Shock Rocks at KayBee Toys in 1987
May 20, 1987. An excellent KayBee Toys advertisement from the Baltimore Sun newspaper offers up this final gasp of the Tonka Rock Lords with the Shock Rocks on sale for $5.99/each. The transforming robot craze pretty much exhausted itself by mid-1986, with only Hasbro’s Transformers maintaining a strong retail presence after so many different lines of cheap transforming robot toys tried — and failed! — to claim market share. Sorry, Rock Lords, but your gimmick wasn’t enough to win that war.
