Too Gross! Too Yucky!
I remember this old, old commercial for the Mad Scientist Monster Lab toy, but I don’t actually remember anyone I knew ever owning the toy.
And as with every single weird toy from the eighties, there are people out there who love this thing more than anyone every should. For example, Duke Nostalgia’s Mad Scientist Page has everything you could ever want to know about this toyline. (A board game? Sure enough, BoardGameGeek even has a page for the game.)
And if that’s not enough for you then you’ll also want to hit this article at RetroJunk. Yeah, the internet is packed with more worthless information than I could ever enjoy in one lifetime. Thank you, internet, for hosting so much nonsense.
(And hey, I fully admit that battlegrip.com contributes to the useless nonsense on the internet. Just think of it as my way of giving back.)
My nephew had this when he was a kid. It wasn’t quite as dramatic as the commercials let on, but it still was a LOT of fun. As a matter of fact, all of the Mad Scientist stuff was a LOT of fun! I don’t recall anything being disappointing– especially the alien autopsy kit… that thing R-U-L-E-D!
Me and my brother had many of the small “Monster Ice” and the playdoh-type sets. The Monster Lab was out of the price range of kids who wanted an impulse buy, especially compared to a Transformer or Joe vehicle.
Did get an empty Dissect-An-Alien at the flea market years later, but it wasn’t much good without the guts.
