Toy Savings at Safeway in 1979

What surprises me most about this 1979 newspaper ad is that it is from the Safeway stores. The contents of the ad are fairly standard for the time — Matchbox toy cars, Yahtzee, Play-Doh, Hungry Hippos, and other classics — but the retailer isn’t one I usually think of when I stop and ask myself: Where should I search for toys?

  1. The local A&P would randomly carry toys from time to time. They were usually up front near the office, and it was only a small section, maybe the size of a checkout endcap. Name brand stuff too, not your usual rack toys. I actually ended up with a G1 Kickback and a G.I. Joe Freefall from that store. I guess they were gifts for being good while my mom was grocery shopping.
