Transformers Autobot Cars on Sale in 1984
December 5, 1984. This grainy Woolworth advertisement isn’t in the best of shape, but the reproduction quality is good enough that we can recognize Mirage, Sideswipe, and Sunstreaker in the advertisement. And that $10.97/each price certainly stands out, taunting us from the past with prices for toys we would happily pay today.
I know that adjusted for inflation and all the $11 per car isn’t as low as it first appears, but I can’t help but think of today’s Transformers prices when I see this ad and feel a little sad. I don’t think we’re truly getting less robot for our dollars today, but the gut response is always “Those old toy prices are so cheap!”
