TSR and Paperbacks in 1984
This 1984 newspaper article by Mark Sabljak reports on TSR’s move into book publishing in the eighties. Touching on the Endless Quest adventure books, Dragonlance, and even mentioning the Marvel and Indiana Jones roleplaying games, this is a fantastic look back at TSR’s business developments of the mid-eighties and is a fabulous read if you’re at all interested in why the company made the leap to fiction publishing.
I find it fascinating that part of what TSR turned to in order to protect itself from “the rollercoaster game-playing market” ultimately contributed to the company’s death in 1997. There’s a lesson here somewhere, yes?
