When You Collect You Need Shelves
Today’s project involved installing new shelves in the bedroom so that there’s room for books and toys. We’re not done yet, but here’s a look at how things are coming together.
That new platform bed is really awesome since it had storage inside, eliminating the need for an external dresser . . . which means more shelf space!
Tomorrow we install more shelves and a cool light. This is gonna be fantastic once we’ve finished.
Nice. Do you mind telling where you’re getting shelves? I need some for an office.
@clark – Those are from Ikea. That’s their “Billy” line. We’ll go back in a few months to add glass doors to these; the cost (time and money) is just too high to install the shelves and doors all at once.
I’ll take more pics this afternoon once we get the last few shelves added to the room.
I buy the Target 5-shelf cases. They usually come in at around $30 or so but I guess there was a sale on, as the last one I picked up was only $20.
The obvious difference though is that they don’t have any form of add-on glass doors.
I use IKEA Billy shelves as well, and as I only have a few shelves, I was able to add the glass doors and shelves. They make a big difference when it comes to displaying the goods, but the cost is pretty significant. It’s worth it, in my opinion, but now I haven’t had the chance to light them yet.
me, i have to resort to buying fence planks and making wood shelves and brackets for the quantity i have. beside, if i had my collection inside the main house, my cats would knock over everything. that would not be a good day.
Platform bed? Genius!
@Iok – Our game room is currently equipped with shelves from Walmart. They work, but those shelves aren’t nearly as nice and once we’re able to the game room shelves will be completely replaced.
The glass doors make a huge difference in both look and in cutting down on dust.
@Paul – We have Besta in the living room and Billy in the dining room and bedroom. The cost can get scary — which is partly why doors for the latest shelves will come later — but the end look is so very nice that it’s worth it to us.
And nice lights are a must!
@rupertvalero – Our cats work with the dogs: The cats knock something down, then the dogs take it outside and eat it. I’ve lost a few cool pieces that way. The doors on the shelves make a great cat barrier.
@Jay – The bed has four drawers in the front, an opening door for underbed storage on each side, and then also has drawers in the headboard. Lots of space!
Yeah, I have my Microman toys in the Ikea 4-glass side cases (their name escapes me at the moment but you know it’ll be Droebi or Plurmi or something) and the difference in dust levels between the toys in there and the toys on the ”open” shelves is amazing. I just wish I had the budget to put all my figures under glass!
