Who owns the tooling to the Mego Buck Rogers vehicles?
I’ve mentioned the old Mego 3.75-inch scale Buck Rogers action figures before (first post, second post), and today I’m wishing that I’d paid better attention when I was a kid and had actually owned a few of these toys. The Star Fighter is clearly the most impressive toy in the line, but that Land Rover and even the playset look like they would have been perfect for use with my Star Wars action figures when I was a kid.
When Mego collapsed a lot of great toys were lost, and in looking at the Mego Museum page I am left wondering just where the tooling went for those vehicles. Rights issues would probably prevent someone from using the tooling exactly as is, but it’s fun to imagine what could happen if the rights were secured and that old tooling uncovered and accessible. The steel was probably repurposed a long time ago, but it still makes for a fun dream.

I get so sad thinking about what happened to some of these old moulds. Locked away in some factory in Asia, not cataloged properly and just forgotten. Or those that are simply broken…sigh…
I was just looking at a video review of the fighter that had the targeting mirror gimmick. A pretty neat concept (though I wasn’t totally into the overall design). My favorite is still the Marauder fighter (which I have somewhere). Buck and co. had some pretty sweet fighters as well. I’d buy these if they were remade or if the license was extended to create more modern/updated renditions.
