Wyvern CCG Kingdom Edition and Chameleon Expansion

I mentioned the Wyvern collectible card game (find at Amazon.com*) over the weekend when I shared an advertisement for the game’s Chameleon expansion (posted here). You may not realize this, but there was a time when Wyvern was a strong seller, attracting players and speculators and leading to a spike in the game’s card values. It was a short-lived boom, part of the growth of collectible card games after the success of Magic, but the game crashed hard and faded away.

The above advertisement for the game’s Kingdom Edition, the unlimited set, promises several features that the company clearly thought was going to keep Wyvern alive in the market as other CCGs were dying. Special cards, revised card text, and updated rules with a summary of play were all designed around Wyvern as a game, but it is the Chameleon section of the ad that points to the interest in keeping individual card values high. “Our scarcest release to date,” not surprisingly, is code for: Valuable! Buy lots! Unfortunately, that didn’t quite work and Wyvern has been a dead game for a few decades now.
